Into the Woods

I read in our Sunday paper yesterday that studies now show that it's a good idea to send your kids outside. Well, I'm so glad I know this. Now I can more confidently, armed by expert opinion, send my 9 yo out to play when she's overly energetic.

The article states that "(T)he Nature Conservancy found that kids under 13 now take part in freestyle play outdoors for only a half-hour a week."

And someone wrote a book about this a few years ago coining the term "nature deficit disorder."

So, there ya go.

Youngest dd spent much of the the last 3 days outside with her friend A. They were mostly swinging, messing around in the woods behind our house, and setting up their new "playhouse" built by Grandad. (It looks like a cross between a toll booth and an outhouse.) They totally love it.

I'm feeling pretty good about that right now.

haha my kids are afraid of the high grass. We have 6 acres secluded... we moweed themn a path out to their very own "secret place" and they are afraid to go out there... monster or something. Maybe it was snakes and alligators, much more likely those, since we live on a bayou. But I spent all my time outside as a kid. Our society convinces us that its unsafe for our child to be alone for more than 5 minutes at a time. And so now they are afraid to be. sad
