I just watched the BBC version and really, really liked it. I haven't read the book (nor any of Gaskell's novels, actually).

Yes, I loved the movie. Saw the movie before I read the book. It inspired me to read the book!
I have read a few of Gaskell's novels. You should read Wives and Daughters. I recommend N&S too.
She is a great alternative to flighty Jane Austen (although not the same time period exactly).
