This year for science at home, younger dd is following a plan I put together several years ago for older dd using the Usborne World of Knowledge Encyclopedia and their Big Book of Experiments. We read a double-page spread each week from the encyclopedia (usually on Tuesday) and then on Wednesday or Thursday we do related experiments from the Big Book.
For ex. earlier this week we read the spread on pp. 38-39 entitled "Floating and Sinking" and then today she and I did several demonstrations from pp. 80-81, "Floating Tests".
First she placed an unpeeled orange in a bowl of water and observed that it sunk. After peeling the orange, it floated! (We watched the air bubbles escaping.) Then we did the old "dancing raisins" thing with ginger ale (not quite clear soda, but it was still possible to see the raisins going up and down, up and down). Lastly she placed an egg in a jar with brine in the bottom half and clear water in the top half -- see how it is floating in the middle of the jar? (Can you see the face drawn on it?)
It's a lot of fun and very rewarding to learn with this cute, enthusiastic, very sweet little girl!
